Hi, as you know we are the Broken Link Organization. We are competing with several other groups for 100,000 dollars to go towards our cause. We were all assigned to research a problem and come up with a way to solve it. As you already know we are researching poverty. We feel that this is a very big issue in today's world. If we win this contest we will be granted the 100,000 dollars. With that money we will construct a shelter/rescue building just for people in poverty. Also People that are living in poverty but aren't necessarily homeless can come to our building and get and donate supplies they need and get help. It is our duty as U.S. citizens to help and rescue those in need. Wouldn't you want someone to help you if you were in that situation?? Now's a chance to think and help someone else.

Answers to our Key Questions:

Why is your topic an important issue? Poverty is and important issue because it deals directly with people. Unlike animals, people have emotions, feelings, and family they care about. Individuals in poverty need help more than anyone else.

Who or what is affected by this issue? Real life everyday people are affected by poverty. Somebody you know could be out of food at home and you might not even know it.

Who is responsible? Most of the time the people affected are the people responsible. Some just don't have the willpower to get back on top of things. Other times it's circumstances. Jobs, food, water, and shelter may simply not be present.

What background information is necessary to understand this topic? To understand what people in poverty really feel like, you need to hear stories about people that really capture you and touch your heart. And to really understand the impact of it all you need facts and figures. Seeing the actual number of people suffering can really change you view of it all.

What were the causes? The causes are loss of job, lack of resources, drug abuse, and disability.

What were the prior causes of these causes? Loss of job can result from something like a factory shutting down, or an individual failing to perform duties correctly. People that are poor as result of lack of resources may be experiencing famine or drought. They may also live in an area naturally lacking of necessary things like in Africa. Drug abuse may start as not big deal, but amounts to taking over your life, perhaps causing you to loose your job. Disability may result from a car accident or life threatening disease.

What are the effects? The effects are losing your house, not being able to keep up with bills, and ultimately not being able to afford food or shelter.

What are the further effects of these effects? Further affects of the effects are possibly starving to death or getting a minor or major sickness that you can't afford to be treated and dying.

Is this an issue outside of Western North Carolina? Of course! Poverty is everywhere and can affect the people you least expect. Someone living as an aristocrat can almost instantly lose all their money from something as simple as a bad investment.
