The number of rural people in poverty is now more than 560,000 in North Carolina. This increased in the 1990's.  Even the dramatic economic growth during the 90's did not have a great impact on the amount of people living in N.C  who are in poverty.

The percent of people living in a rural area under the age of 18 living in poverty is 25.2% The total number is 157,381 just in kids under the age of 18!!
